Equipment Mechanic/Operator


This position will be responsible for the day to day maintenance of the fleet equipment. Preventative maintenance, minor repairs to Class A trucks, forklifts, tractors and turf equipment. This position will keep logs of equipment maintenance and schedule and perform all maintenance on all grounds equipment including daily inspections, greasing, and adjusting. Required Experience:

Candidate must have previous mechanic experience on grounds equipment. Candidate must have previous Diesel engine experience. Candidate must obtain a DOT physical prior to the start date. Candidate must be able to lift 50 pounds Candidate must be willing to work as a team and as a solo individual. This position will work on various athletic fields throughout the Northeast region of the United States, including professional, collegiate, private school, and municipalities. This position consists of physical labor and basic operating skills. This position includes but is not limited to equipment operation, laser grading, amending soils, installation of turfgrass, topdressing, seeding, and minor irrigation repair. Required Experience:

  • Candidate must have previous experience in turf-grass, landscape, or related field and equipment operation experience (1+ years)

Job Summary

Windy Knob Farm is a historic 206-acre farm and estate in Millis, MA.  It was formerly the home of Christian Herter, Governor of MA and Secretary of State under Eisenhower and has been continuously used as a farm.  A co-op will work with one of the owners in creating and implementing a sustainable plan for caring for and improving the landscaping and grounds surrounding Windy Knob Farm.                        

Primary responsibilities

  • Assess condition of various garden areas of the farm as well as grounds generally with attention to hard to mow and maintain areas.
  • Research methods and means for improving the areas and maintaining them - ideally to make them more low-maintenance and sustainable.
  • Generate care/improvement plan and assist in implementation by:
    • Planting flowers, grass, shrubs, bushes, groundcover.
    • Trimming and pruning trees, shrubs and bushes.
    • Weeding and watering landscaping areas.
    • Raking/mulching.
    • Creating new areas of landscaping.
    • Implementing environmentally safe means of pest (insect and weed) control.
    • Apply environmentally safe fertilizers to ground to enhance growth.
  • Assist with mowing and weedwhacking of some areas until a better management method is implemented, so areas do not become overgrown.
  • Advise on  identifying and controlling invasive species on farm.

Secondary responsibilities

  • May be asked to assist with maintenance of vegetable and fruit growing areas being managed by the farmer leasing some of the grounds, such as by weeding, fertilizing, etc. 
  • May be asked to fulfill some animal care activities such as releasing, cooping up/moving and/or feeding animals being used to assist in landscaping, such as chickens and guinea fowl for tick/dandelion control and goats for weed consumption.
