GooseBusters is looking for a handler. [Alumni job] GooseBusters started ten years ago in Dedham with one border collie who needed work so the owners hired themselves out to visit various properties twice a day. Jessie would chase geese off of land and out of ponds.

Now there are four dogs and seventeen properties are serviced. A loop is made every morning to visit each property. The handler lets the dogs out of the car and directs them to the geese. Some properties require a minimal amount of walking; others can be covered from right beside the car. Properties with nothing but a grassy field are easy; the dogs run at the geese and return to the car in less than a minute. Properties with ponds and rivers require more effort. The handler must direct the dogs and get them to swim. The geese never go away forever but the service definitely reduces the numbers of geese and minimizes the mess they make.


In addition to working the geese the dogs need to have fun too. They spend a lot of time in the car! So the handler will need to exercise the dogs as well by throwing a ball/frisbee in our yard or at a park. (It's better not to do it on one of the goose properties so the dogs aren't diverted from the goose work.). We ask that you do this twice while doing the morning loop.


In peak season (April through October) the entire loop is about 90 miles and takes about five hours. In the winter the loop is shorter and only takes two to three hours. Pay is based on the number of properties and the amount of time required to work each one. In peak season the pay is about $90 per loop. In October we stop working some of the properties and pay decreases to about $55 per loop. We also do a shortened loop in the afternoons/evenings so that we can revisit some of the properties. Pay varies with which properties we do on a given day. We do report to the IRS.


We provide a car. On the rare occasions that we ask you to use your own car we will pay for gas and tolls.


We have a few expectations that we want to be clear about:

  • We need to be visible on the properties. That means walking the dogs around the property even if you see no geese. Look for goose droppings and let us know if you see any.
  • Be prepared to receive a call sending you back to a property or asking you to skip ahead to a specific property. We frequently get calls from clients telling us that the geese are there.
  • Expect to meet people who object to what you're doing. We need to respond calmly when we are approached. We have purchased pinnies for everyone to wear in the hope that we'll receive less flack.
  • The goal of each visit is to be there when the geese are there, not simply to check off another property. So try to time your visits with the presence of the geese as best you can. 


Timing is somewhat flexible. Our earliest starting time is about 6:30 am, but that can be modified as needed. In the winter the start time is later. Afternoons vary as well; we need to visit the properties when we expect to find the geese. Generally that means being gone sometime between 3:00 and 6:00.

The role of the Laboratory Animal Medicine Service is to facilitate research and teaching with animals at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. To do this, LAMS develops and implements a high quality program of animal care and use to enable the teaching and research activities of the school. This program is characterized by a high level of client service, strong veterinary expertise, effective technical service delivery, quality animal housing and care, compliance with federal and state regulations and maintenance of AAALACi accreditation.

Provide excellent husbandry and care to a wide variety of laboratory and teaching animals. Specific animal duties include: receipt and transport, provision of food and water, changing and cleaning of cages, monitoring health and welfare, documentation of census and animal health records, handling and restraint, sanitation of caging and rooms. Operation of various equipment and transport vehicles. The candidate must be committed to the humane handling and care of animals used in research and be able to provide services to a variety of research investigators. This position will require working in a BSL-2 environment and may require working in a BSL-3 and/or select agent environment.

High School Diploma or equivalent with minimum of one year experience with animals either in a research or veterinary setting. Valid US Driver's License which must be maintained for the duration of employment. Should be comfortable using Microsoft programs including Word, Excel, Power Point, Sirius, the e-mail network and internet. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. with or without accommodation. Wheaton College Greenhouse Horticulturist and Biology Departmental Assistant [Alumni job] in Norton, MA seeks to hire a Greenhouse Horticulturist who will manage the operation of Wheaton’s state of the art greenhouse facilities and provide administrative support to the Biology Department. 12-month appointment; 35 hours per week for 39 weeks (academic year) and 15 hours per week for 13 weeks (summer); flexible scheduling; eligible for full-time benefits; two-year probationary period with annual reviews.

Summary: The Wheaton Greenhouse Facility consists of four climate-controlled greenhouses, four growth chambers, potting facility, and office located on the roof of the LEED-certified Mars Center for Science and Technology constructed in 2011. The greenhouse serves as a teaching collection featuring plants spanning a wide range of taxonomic diversity, ecological adaptations, and economic importance; a research facility for student and faculty experiments; and a collection for public outreach to the Wheaton College community as well as the Norton-Mansfield-Taunton region.

Duties: Under the direction of the botany professor and/or Biology Department Chair, the Greenhouse Collections Manager is responsible for the operation of the greenhouse facilities, including being on call for emergency situations seven days per week and 24 hours per day.

Greenhouses: The Greenhouse Horticulturist is responsible for operating and supervising the maintenance of the greenhouse facilities including the heating, ventilating, lighting, and watering systems.

Plant collections: The Greenhouse Horticulturist maintains the specimens of the plant collections in healthy condition and in useful form for instructional and research purposes by means of daily watering of the plant collections; daily monitoring and evaluating the cultural needs of the individual plants in the collections; effective pest and disease controls; periodic fertilizing, pruning, re-potting, and acquisition of specimens; and any other specific cultural needs of individual specimens. The Greenhouse Horticulturist is responsible for developing these collections, through exchanges and new acquisitions, in accordance with the teaching and research needs of faculty in the Biology Department. Working with the botany professor, the Horticulturist will be expected to develop a database inventory of the collection and to formulate and execute a vision for how to best display the collection.

Administration: The Greenhouse Horticulturist is responsible for the administration of the greenhouse facilities by maintaining plant collection records and labeling the plant collections; ordering materials and equipment; training, providing lead oversight, and hiring student workers; communicating with faculty and students concerning their instructional and research needs; coordinating uses of greenhouse facilities; maintaining a schedule for the greenhouse to be open to the campus community and the general public; communicating with the education and research greenhouse community; engaging in outreach to the Wheaton Community and general public.

Departmental Assistant Duties: 5-10 hours per week will be devoted to working with the Biology Departmental Assistant as needed. Duties include the setting up and dismantling teaching labs or other duties required by the department.

Qualifications – Education and experience: Must have an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in horticulture (or equivalent) OR two years of experience working in a greenhouse, plant nursery, or botanical garden.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills: The Greenhouse Collections Manager must be able to work independently and is expected to have the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students; anticipate instructional needs; utilize standard computer applications; operate and maintain greenhouse facilities; move and manipulate heavy plant specimens; culture and propagate a diverse collection of plants used for teaching and research; identify greenhouse pests and pathogens; apply biological control measures to maintain the health of the plant collections; supervise and coordinate student workers, equipment, and space on a 7-day-a-week basis to achieve these goals. Ability to communicate effectively.

Woodworker Needed: Need a 1'-2' wood desktop made to go with pre-made stand-up desk frame. Here is a link to the picture of the stand-up desk and below you'll find more information from the company.
"The company's desk frame is compatible with any desktop (other than glass) that is between 84" and 48" long, and 24" and 34" deep."
We recommend a desktop thickness of at least 1" - 2". Our solid wood desks are 2" thick, so I think that is a good thickness.

Bay State Generator is looking to hire a student(s) helper, part-time (or full-time Co-op) on Saturdays, school vacations, etc. He or she would be on the road with the owner or a Technician, or working at our Middleboro facility. Most tasks would be assisting with Scheduled Preventive Maintenance, or assisting with new installations, performing repairs, or other tasks such as performing inventory and routine maintenance of our equipment. Most of our service calls are local, i.e. South Shore, Cape Cod, etc.

My preference for applicants would be for a student from Tech school programs such as ElectricalAutomotive Technology, or HVAC. The Generators themselves are mostly natural gas or propane-powered engines, which drive an Electrical Generator. We also provide service on the Automatic Transfer Switches (an electrical component), and electronic Controls for the Generator. Someone with a background in machinery, mechanical or electrical would be a great start.
